Transport and streets

A good transport system is a fundamental necessity of everyday life.  It must serve the social and economic needs of an area in a safe and efficient manor with minimal impact on the local and global environment.

Bedfordshire County Council is the highway authority for the County (excluding Luton, motorways and trunk roads) and responsible for providing and promoting sustainable transport. This is done in collaboration with adjoining authorities and agencies.

Transport and land use planning will be challenging in Bedfordshire over the coming years as a result of the proposed high level of housing growth.

Our Local Transport Plan sets out our polices and programmes on how all areas of transport (including walking, cycling and public transport) will be developed over the next few years to address these challenges.

We don’t just plan transport changes however. We are responsible for the every day running of our network and making sure that public transport, roads, pavements and footpaths are all safe and well maintained.
