History of the Festival for Older People
The Festival for Older People in Bedfordshire (formerly known as the Exhibition of Services for Older People) was established to provide a forum where older people could receive information and advice regarding all services and benefits currently available in Bedfordshire, involving statutory and voluntary agencies.
The first exhibition was organised by the County Council in partnership with Bedford Borough Council and Bedford Guild House and took place on 1 May 2002 at the Corn Exchange, Bedford. It was highly successful with over 1000 visitors attending and very positive feedback.
Further exhibitions in Bedford were held in May 2003, 2004 and 2005. Exhibitors such as Age Concern, the Alzheimer’s Society, Primary Care Trusts, Environment Agency, Pension Service, to name but a few, all take part along with representatives from the private sector.
The success of each exhibition has grown each year and led to demand for more local exhibitions. As a result smaller, but equally successful, exhibitions were held in South Bedfordshire in 2004 and Mid Bedfordshire in 2005.
In 2006 the Bedford exhibition was organised in partnership with Age Concern and Bedford Borough Council and renamed the Festival for Older People. As well as the usual exhibitors, a programme of activities and demonstrations ran throughout the day. A similar event was also held in Dunstable.
In 2007 the Bedford festival took place on 13 June at the Bedford Corn Exchange.
The first Festival in Biggleswade was held on 6 November at the Weatherley Centre and was organised in partnership with Aragon Housing Association, Mid Beds District Council and Age Concern.
