– a County Unitary Proposal for Bedfordshire

A single council covering all of Bedfordshire (excluding Luton) could save taxpayers across the county £26.6 million in running costs - that’s roughly equivalent to our entire annual budget for highways and transport.  

The County Council believes that a County-wide unitary authority would preserve and enhance Bedfordshire's identity and its strategic ability, and offer residents better, more responsive and cheaper local government services.     

We believe it would deliver better leadership for Bedfordshire's future prosperity and deliver faster decisions. It would clearly represent local views on the growth agenda. And it could lobby with a stronger voice for investment in transport, new jobs, schools, medical and community facilities which growing communities need.

The Government is consulting some of our key partners to find out what they think of our proposal.

An alternative proposal put forward by Bedford Borough Council is also being consulted on.
