Disability equality

Promoting disability equality

In order to ensure that right across the Council issues of diversity are recognised and addressed correctly, Bedfordshire County Council is implementing the Equality Standard for Local Government.  The Council has developed a Comprehensive Equality and Diversity Policy and a Corporate Equality and Diversity Plan which sets out the way in which the Council is ensuring that issues relating to race, gender, gender reassignment disability, faith religion, belief, age and sexual orientation are taken into account, both in terms of the services we provide and the employment practices that we adopt.

The Disability Equality Scheme supports this approach and demonstrates specifically the way in which the Council is promoting disability equality and meeting the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 to:

  • Promote equality of opportunity between disabled people and other persons
  • Eliminate discrimination that is unlawful under the Act
  • Eliminate harassment of disabled persons that is related to their disability
  • Promote positive attitudes towards disabled people
  • Encourage participation by disabled people in public life
  • Take steps to take account of disabled persons disabilities, even where that involves treating disabled people more favourably than others.
