Frequently asked Questions

In response to a suggestion from a couple of our web-users, we have designed this new section to improve access to some of the basic information about our services.

Q1. What are your opening hours?

We are open Monday (9am – 7pm) and Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays (9am - 5pm). We are closed on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays and on all Bank Holidays. We are on ansaphone on Thursdays, but will usually respond to telephone messages or e-mails promptly, usually the next day. See Contact the Archives Section for more information

Q2. Do you operate either a reader’s ticket or a booking system?

No, in both cases. Nor do you have to book equipment such as microfilm readers or power points to run your lap-top off the mains. You can, however, arrange an appointment to see a named member of staff here who may be a specialist in a particular field of research. See How to Find Us| section for more information

Q3. What are your hours for producing documents in the search room?

The ordering service operates 9am – 12.45 and again from 2pm – 4.30pm (6.30pm on Mondays). We aim to get documents out within 5 minutes of orders being placed. See also 3.

Q4. Can I order documents in advance of my visit?

This isn't necessary as we can normally get original archives out for visitors within a few minutes (we have a 5-minute target for orders). An exception might be if you are expecting to arrive between 12.45pm and 2pm when the ordering service is not operational, although (where visitors were not aware of this) we may get some items out for you to be able to work over the lunchtime period. If you do order in advance for the lunchtime period, then please let us know if you are delayed or if your plans change.

Q5. Is there car-parking on site?

A5. Yes, there is limited parking on site, but we cannot promise that you will find a space. For more information see: How to Find Us| section

Q.6 What copying facilities do you offer?

We have black and white and colour photocopiers, and can provide digital scans of documents. See our policy on copying| and scale of charges| for details. We also allow photography| in the searchroom, not with flash and for private use, provided documents are not put at risk and you don’t disrupt other visiting users. There is no charge but we welcome donations as we provide the service free. For advice on commercial use, copyright, and any other issues etc., it’s best to talk to us.

Q.8 Can you do research for me?

Yes we operate a research and enquiry service| which covers enquiries by telephone, and in writing including e mail.
