Volume 2, Issue 3

Summer 2008

 Band
Despite the very early Easter holiday this year, the spring term was full with a range of successful Master Classes and Wind Band Days. It was clear from all the wonderful performances enjoyed by everyone who participated, and in the performances to family and friends at the end of each event, that Wind Band Days are a wonderful opportunity for students of all ages and ability not only to socialise, but to learn how to play in a group: no matter what level they play at! The easter series of County band and orchestra courses and concerts was a resounding success, with all groups playing superbly.

You will no doubt be aware of the changes in Local Government that will take place in Bedfordshire from April 2009. As a County-wide service, the implications of this reorganisation for Bedfordshire Music will be challenging. Therefore, over the next twelve months, our priorities are simple: firstly, to ensure that throughout the next year our service delivery remains stable and high quality opportunities continue to be provided. Secondly, working closely with the new Local Authorities, we will aim to ensure that new structures put into place from April 2009 will continue to provide high quality musical opportunities and experiences for children, young people and adults that will be as good as, or better than our current provision. Undoubtedly, the next year will be an extremely busy time for Bedfordshire Music and we will aim to keep everyone informed about any changes that may take place as part of this reorganisation.

Junior StringsLooking forward, the summer term will see our usual range of Fiddle Fiestas and Guitar Festivals, Master Classes and numerous concerts and events taking place across Bedfordshire. The term will conclude with our summer series of County band and orchestra courses and concerts, which this year will see the Second County Wind Band touring to Belgium. The next academic year will open with what promises to be a fiery performance of Carmen, given by the County Youth Opera over five evenings in early September.
