Foot and Mouth & Bluetongue Outbreaks
Bluetongue confirmed as circulating in South East England
Defra confirmed on 28 September that Bluetongue disease is circulating between the local animal and midge population in East Anglia. The announcement followed epidemiological investigation of several cases of the disease and took account of surveillance results. The first case was detected on 22 September. The disease has now spread to other parts of South East England.
The disease, caused by a virus spread by midges, affects ruminants but not pigs, horses or humans. Check the declarations and maps to see if your premises are in a Zone. All movement licence conditions for Bluetongue must be complied with. Surveillance and epidemiological investigations are continuing.
The Secretary of State has declared Bedfordshire to be a temporary controlled area to prevent the spread of Bluetongue. This affects any farmers with ruminating animals and will restrict their movement for the duration of the control order.
